Inside The Cup: What Is All This Talk About Polyphenols?

Welcome to a new little segment we have coined “Inside the Cup: An Elo Research Brief” where Registered and Licensed Dietitian, and co-founder, Emily Meade will take the latest research on all-things coffee, and deliver it in bite-size, easier-to-understand ways.

So without further ado, let’s get into it…

A fascinating new study published in Nature Communications is giving researchers another reason to look at coffee as much more than just a source of caffeine. Researchers at the University College Cork recently examined how coffee interacts with the gut-brain axis, which is the communication system connecting our digestive system, gut microbiome, and brain. They found that both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee influenced the gut microbiome, and were associated with improvements in mood, including lower reported stress. More of that, please!

In fact, the two types of coffee (caffeinated + decaffeinated) appeared to have differing effects. Caffeinated coffee was associated with greater attention and alertness, while participants drinking decaf showed improvements in learning and memory. Researchers believe compounds naturally present in coffee, polyphenols specifically, may help explain why some of coffee’s effects extend beyond caffeine alone.

Did you know that coffee is one of the richest dietary sources of polyphenols, a broad family of plant compounds that are studied for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Chlorogenic acids (CGAs) are among the most dominant polyphenols found in coffee, and these include a whole family of related compounds, which are being studied for how they may influence oxidative stress, inflammation, glucose metabolism, cardiovascular function, and the gut microbiome. Interestingly, the coffee roasting process transforms some of these intricate compounds, while also creating new compounds. Consider this another reminder that coffee is incredibly complex! Researchers are continuing to learn more about how the compounds inside your daily cup of coffee may interact with your gut, metabolism, mood, and brain. And we are here for it!
